More than ever before, teams are looking to brands to prioritize safety in the workplace.
No matter an employee’s industry, location, or position, workplace safety is always a concern.
There are guidelines set up within companies, as well as at the local, state, and national levels, in order to maintain a safe environment. For instance, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), following the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. This is just one example of the education and awareness that exists, in order to make sure people are well when they are on the job.
And currently, workplace safety is more important to people than ever.
According to the State of Employee Safety Report, around 80% of employees are, more than usual, showing a concern towards their well-being at work. In particular, these concerns include public health crises, cyberattacks, weather, crime, and violence.
Therefore, it is important that brands…
- stay current on relevant safety information, as well as pass it on to their teams (This includes those pieces of information at the local, state, and national levels, helping to keep everyone on the same page.)
- have protocols in place, which are always reviewed (For instance, what should everyone do if there is a fire? A tornado? An active shooter?)
- give employees access to tools that can fight against these threats (Depending on the type of workplace, this can be anything from virus protection on computers to therapists and hand sanitizer, all of which can assist in people feeling safe.)
- maintain open communication, allowing for further concerns to be addressed (Just as a business/organization will have safety rules/reminders posted and emailed, they should also make everyone feel comfortable when sharing feedback. Do the current protocols make sense to you? Is there an area that needs more coverage? What ideas could enhance overall wellness even more?)
In addition, there are tangible items that can help promote safety in the workplace, such as pieces of gear and technological gadgets that can be included in employee welcome kits and incentives and awards that can serve as regular reminders. While an email, a poster, and a meeting about, say, a new health regulation is nice, be sure to take it a step further: Give a custom gift that will keep rules and policies top of mind, each time they are seen, worn, and used. These can, as well, be given to clients, social media followers, customers, fans, investors, and beyond, spreading even more positivity!
